Quick tip: Winter tidy-up

The month of June for me is a time to plant new shrubs and fruit trees whilst pruning, weeding and generally tidying up the garden – in preparation for spring. If you find you have empty beds over winter it is a good idea to plant green manure crops such as lupins, oats or mustard. These fix nitrogen in the soil over winter but remember to dig them in before they go to flower.

My last tip for this blog: make the effort to clean up around your fruit trees, raking up any old fruit, so as to prevent bugs from overwintering in the grass.
